  NEWS

GB call up follows Special Olympics success.

3 members of the Special Needs Unit Gymnasts club (SNUGS) have been invited to train with the GB Disability display squad in preparation for the World Gymnstraeda 2015 in Helsinki.

The 3 young ladies – Jannette Sharpe, Katherine Marfleet and Teresa Law – all have Down’s syndrome. They have been taking part in weekly gymnastics and trampoline training with SNUGS for approximately 10 - 12 years.

The SNUGS team of 8 gymnasts brought back a stunning 34 medals from the Summer Games. Other team members were Jessica Martin, Susannah Meredith, Eleanore Warde, Molly Romain and Bradley Johnson-Sim.

Following the success of 8 members at the club in August at the National Summer Games of the Special Olympics, held at Bath University, the girls were invited to become part of the GB squad.

Club Chairperson, Wendy Marfleet said, “As well as having a learning disability, these 3 girls have overcome the low muscle tone and hyper-mobile joints that people with Down’s syndrome have as well as learning complex routines set to music. At the Summer Games each gymnast performed 2 team routines and 4 individual ones with apparatus such as ribbon, hoop, ball and rope. They attend training every week and although they are not the highest performing gymnasts they were selected because of their dedication to the sport, their calmness when competing and performing, and their ability to remember the routines and their team work. Our club is very proud of their achievements. The team could not have taken part without the generous support of the Milton Keynes Community Foundation, and the Lions Club of Bletchley.” The girls were part of the winning Team of the Year award at the recent MK Sport awards.

Head Coach Harry Sharpe, MBE mentioned that although the girls are part of the National squad there is no central funding for learning disability sport, unlike Paralympic sport, and the club will need to fundraise over £3000 for the girls to attend training in Crewe and to attend the event in Helsinki.

News - National Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition

SNUGS recently hosted this successful competition and our team won many individual medals as well as the team medal.

Well done everyone.

  CAMPAIGN

We are currently raising funds to send our gymnasts to a competition in June.

This is a trampoline competition for people with disabilities. The National Down's Syndrome Gymnastics championships will also take place in June.

In this video, Katherine shows the games in 2009 were an amazing experience.

We will also be sending gymnasts to compete in Poole and Cardiff in forthcoming months.
These competitions recognise years of training and sustained effort and enthusiasm on the part of our gymnasts and coaches.
While the focus is the competition - it is the extended social opportunities, making new friends, performing, experiencing new places and even staying in a hotel that will form treasured memories for the gymnasts and their families for years to come.

We receive no central funding and gymnasts and families are self-funding. As most gymnasts receive benefits of some kind. SNUGS relies on grants and donations to fund these opportunities.
